Shawna McClure
Our 2025 Keynote Speaker: Detective Shawna McClure (Retired)
Detective Shawna McClure dedicated 25 years of her life to serving and protecting her community through law enforcement. Her distinguished career began in 1996 with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, where she served as a Special Deputy until 1998. She then briefly worked in the private security sector with the International Protection Company before continuing her public service with the Atlantic, Iowa Police Department from 1999 to 2007. Shawna concluded her law enforcement career with the Omaha Police Department, serving from 2007 until her medical retirement in June 2021 due to a severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) diagnosis.
Determined to turn her personal challenges into a new mission of service, Shawna embarked on an academic journey focused on mental health and wellness. She earned her Associate’s degree in Psychology from Iowa Western Community College in 2023, followed by a Bachelor’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Psychology and a minor in Sociology from the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) in 2025. She has since been accepted into UNO’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate program and is on track to earn her Master’s degree in 2028.
Passionate about supporting the mental health of those who serve, Shawna plans to become a licensed counselor specializing in the unique needs of first responders and their families. She is a dedicated peer support advocate and volunteers as a peer support specialist with several national and local organizations, including The Wounded Blue, Call for Backup, the First Responders Support Network, and the First Responders Foundation.
A proud legacy of law enforcement, Shawna is the daughter and granddaughter of retired veteran officers. She is married to Ken McClure, a veteran K-9 handler with the Council Bluffs Police Department. Together, they have four children—Kevin, Derek, Jacqueline, and Joseph—and six grandchildren: Everleigh, Eliska, Bear, Sonnet, Sutton, and Ryker.
Having spent 25 years serving her community as a police officer, Shawna is now committed to spending the rest of her life serving those who serve.
